High School Awarded Health Services Grant

January 15, 2013

A Monticello High School medical program is getting a big boost and a name change.

The Virginia Department of Education has designated the high school's health and medical science academy as a "Regional Governor's Health Services Academy."

Now the division will receive a $10,000 grant to help with the program. The academy will be open to all Albemarle County students interested in exploring health sciences career opportunities.

"It will really help me focus my view on what I'd like to be and during college I'll be able understand what I'm talking about a little bit more than some of the other students," said Charlie Wolfe, a 9th grade student. "I'll feel a little more comfortable in the other classes."

An industry study by Albemarle County this past year identified the health and medical device industries as being a top economic development priority based upon the potential for higher-paying employment growth.

“As our population ages and with the expansion of access to medical care, health and medical care professions not only will be a source of employment, but also for high quality medical care delivery,” said Katina Dudley, who is the academy’s director.

Applications to attend the academy in the 2013-14 school year are being accepted through Friday, January 18. More information can be found Here
