It has been nearly a week since a Crozet man was killed in a hit and run accident, and Albemarle County Police are expecting to bring charges against one of the drivers on Friday.
But a second driver is still out there.
The victim's family is clinging to the good memories they have of Carroll Herring, but the way his life ended... has them searching for answers.
"Carroll was unique," said Virginia Herring, who married Carroll's cousin.
She says Carroll spent all 71 years of his life living on the same farm in Crozet. He was proud of the size of his garden.
"He would grow veggies," said Virginia. "(His wife) Judy would say, 'Carroll Donald, you do not have to plant such a large garden.' But he went around in this community and shared. He touched so many lives in Crozet. It's unreal."
That was evident at Carroll's funeral on Tuesday, when an estimated 500 people came to pay respects.
Police say Carroll was hit by one car, then immediately another on Friday night while visiting the mailbox across the street from his house. Police found one of those drivers later that night.
"Charges are still pending for that driver," said Albemarle Police Public Information Officer Carter Johnson. "We're consulting the Commonwealth's attorney."
But the other driver, in a white Saab, has not been located.
"The vehicle that was involved definitely has front-end damage," said Johnson. "So that would be a key in our investigation. We're calling towing companies, auto parts stores, dealerships."
Family members are watching the investigation closely. They say they understand that mistakes can happen, but it's time for the driver to fess up.
"I really honestly believe that if these people had stopped it would have made all the difference in the world," said Virginia Herring. "Just the fact that you could do that, and not stop. I think there's a little bitterness."
Carroll Herring is survived by his wife, Judy, his two sons, Todd and Troy, and six grandchildren.
Albemarle County Police plan to release the name of the first driver on Friday, after he is charged. They are asking people to call them if they have any tips about the second driver in the white Saab.
