RICHMOND, Virginia (AP)— The House of Delegates has passed legislation to keep the names of concealed handgun permit holders secret.
Republican Sen. Mark Obenshain's bill originally just shielded the names of permit applicants who have obtained protective orders against another person. The House Militia and Police Committee last week expanded the bill to cover anyone who obtains a permit.
The House voted 76-23 to pass the bill Tuesday.
Some Democrats opposed the bill, arguing that other permits issued by the state are public records. Republican Del. Todd Gilbert of Shenandoah County said it protects the privacy and safety of law-abiding gun owners.
The bill now goes back to the Senate to consider the House amendment, which Obenshain supports. He issued a written statement thanking the House for its action.
