House Confirms Helen Dragas' Appointment

January 29, 2013

Helen Dragas has won a second term as the Rector of the UVa Board of Visitors.

She cleared her final hurdle on Tuesday in the Virginia General Assembly.

The majority of the House of Delegates voted to re-appoint Dragas, but the margin was much narrower than past votes have been.

Dragas got the support of 63 delegates, while 33 of them voted against her. Local Delegates Rob Bell, David Toscano, and Steve Landes voted nay to her re-appointment.

Dragas was criticized over the summer for her attempts to force out UVa President Teresa Sullivan.

Opponents argued that it put the university in chaos for a couple weeks, and forced UVa to be put "on warning" by an accreditation agency.

Supporters say Sullivan and Dragas have moved on from the incident, and are willing to work together.

Members of the UVa Student Council went to Richmond last week in an attempt to prevent lawmakers from supporting Dragas.

However, in the end most of those lawmakers decided not to second-guess the Governor McDonnell's choice
