New employment numbers show that Charlottesville is one of the few cities in Virginia that is not gaining jobs. The unemployment rate in the city was 5.2% in March.
Hundreds of local job-seekers were hoping Wednesday was their lucky day. An estimated one thousand people came to John Paul Jones Arena to be matched up with 72 employers.
AJ White said his goal was "to find a job that pays good."
JPJ was a good place for that.
"We have employers from all different industries. Education, government, health care, retail," said economic development specialist Hollie Lee. "We've maxed out this space. We have 72 employers and we had several that we had to turn away."
White says, walking from booth to booth sure beats the alternative.
"Coming here is easier than looking online for openings for jobs or going from store to store and they tell you they're not hiring," said White.
"Most of the employers here are actually hiring," said Lee. She says others are offering educational opportunities.
For those who didn't come completely prepared, there were places where they could practice doing job interviews or even write their resume on site.
