Illegal Hunting in Scottsville Causes Concerns

October 12, 2012

Residents in Scottsville say hunting is not uncommon in their area. They say the problem is illegal hunting and trespassing.

Matt Holt manages property in Scottsville and says walking on the land is now a problem.

"It's dangerous and I know they are out there. I can hear them but nothing seem to be able to be done about it," said Holt.

Holt fears that he or his dog could be accidentally shot, mistaken for a deer.

"We have no problem with the institution of hunting. I'm a hunter myself but what nobody has the right to do is trespass without permission," said Albemarle County Supervisor Chris Dumler.

The board of supervisors voted to give $12,000 in overtime funds so that local law enforcement could crack down on the problem, adding more patrol.

"People shouldn't be scared to go out and enjoy their own property because other people aren't following the rules," said Dumler.

Residents hope the extra patrol will resolve the illegal hunting.
