Investigation Sought of AG's Role in Va. Lawsuit

June 10, 2013

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A state senator representing southwest Virginia is asking the inspector general to investigate the state attorney general's office's role in a dispute over natural gas royalties between two energy companies and the owners of property where the gas was drilled.

The decision Monday by Sen. Phillip P. Puckett follows an opinion by a federal judge last week in which she said she was shocked that an associate attorney general had been assisting EQT Production Co. and CNX Gas Co., two Pittsburgh-area energy companies.

The landowners' potential class action claims the companies bilked them and thousands of others out of tens of millions of dollars in royalty payments.

The attorney general's office has said the assistant attorney general, Sharon Pigeon, had a limited, constitutional interest in the case.
