Jack Jouett Students Take Top Prizes for Wind Turbine Design

March 29, 2013

Students at Jack Jouett Middle School took home top prizes in a competition to design efficient wind turbines.

Jouett students competed in the Virginia Kid Wind Competition, taking first place for their electricity-generating turbines. The sixth and seventh graders spent time after school engineering, designing and creating the turbines.

The students said they were speechless when they won, because they faced some pretty stiff competition.

"The people we went against were high schoolers," said sixth grader Myles Ward. "They came in with big generators, and we came in with this one."

"It worked," said seventh grader Hyeonggon Kim. "That's when I wanted to be an engineer. My mom told me that gets paid a lot."

The students are already working on their next project, and are looking forward to next year's competition.
