James River Expedition Launches Saturday

June 22, 2013

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The James River is being transformed into a classroom as students from around Virginia embark in canoes, rafts and other watercraft to learn more about the nation's Founding River.

Called the James River Expedition, it begins Saturday when students and their teachers launch their adventure from Iron Gate. Students from Hopewell, Williamsburg and Chesapeake will be on this journey, which ends June 29.

Besides the upper James, the middle and lower portions of the river will be studied by two future explorations scheduled through August. While on the James, students will test water quality, identify wildlife and hear from experts on the river's history and ecology.

This is the third year for the expedition. It is sponsored The Dominion Foundation, which is providing a $50,000 grant.
