Jefferson School City Center Preparing for First Anniversary

Dec. 27, 2013

The Jefferson School City Center is preparing to celebrate their one year anniversary in January.

The center was part of a project to help bring the Charlottesville community together. The Jefferson School was the first high school in Charlottesville for African American students in the 1920's.

The building is now home to several community organizations, including the African-American Heritage Center.

The director of the heritage center, Andrea Douglas, says she hopes for many more years of service.

"We've really become what we believe to be a social and educational hub for the community. The kind of recreational opportunities that you can get at Carver Rec, that coupled with a space like Martha Jefferson, Star Hill, all of those things in one building. And as we watch Main Street change, this place becomes the touchstone."

Organizers are inviting residents to the first year anniversary, which will be held on January 18th at the Jefferson School City Center.

Tickets for the event are $125 each, but you can buy a table for eight people for $990. Dinner will be provided, and a silent auction will be held.

All of the proceeds from the celebration will go toward keeping the Jefferson School up and running.
