Democratic 5th District candidate John Douglass sent an email Thursday to supporters thanking them for standing by him during the campaign.
Douglass was defeated Tuesday night by incumbent Rep. Robert Hurt.
In the message, Douglass said he is humbled by all his supporters did for him.
Offering an explanation for the loss, Douglass said "We did not have the money the other side had, and we would not stoop to the lies they put out. We refused to put greed in front of good." However, he went on to say that now is the time to work across the aisle for the common good.
Below is the full text of his message to his supporters:
I am writing to thank all of you for all we did together during the recent election. I have waited a day on purpose to get a good nights sleep and put this all in my own personal words.
I knew from the beginning that this would not be easy. We set three goals, first was to get our President reelected, second, was to get Tim Kaine elected, and third was to win our election. All three were important to our Country and to Virginia.
As we traveled across Virginia you opened your homes, your hearts, and your pocketbooks to us. I am humbled by all you have done and the love you have extended to Susan and myself and our team.
My years of service have taught me that true leadership is not easy. We knew the challenge would be to convince the people of Virginia that the future of working families depended on all of us working together for the common good. That is what you learn from being a soldier.
We did not have the money the other side had, and we would not stoop to the lies they put out. We refused to put greed in front of good.
We won two of our three objectives. Now let us see what the other side does in the days and weeks ahead. Its time for all of us to put our country and our people first and to work across the aisle for the common good.
I have spoken to many of you in person and I want all of you to know how thankful I am for all you have done.
There is much to do. I hope you all will stay involved and together we will make Virginia proud.
With warm regards, and very respectfully,
