UPDATE: Jury Seated in Trial of Taybronne White

September 24, 2013

After a day of questioning potential members, the jury is now seated in the trial of Taybronne White.

White is accused in the 2011 triple homicide of Lisa Hwang, Dustin Knighton and Brian Lee Daniels on Octonia Road in Greene County.

The trial officially began at 9:30 a.m. with jury selection. At least 80 people showed up for jury duty, and the judge and counsel spent a majority of the day whittling the number down.

Now, 14 people are serving on the jury -- 12 jurors and two alternates. The jurors identified as the alternates won't be announced until the closing statements.

The jury represents eight men and six women, and among them only one minority. White's father, Alonzo Cutchin, told the Newsplex after the day ended that he's not happy with the final selection, saying it's an injustice to his son.

"That's why the law says you should be tried by 12 people of your peers. A jury of your own peers. Because they can identify with you," he said. "They can identify with people of different ethnic backgrounds. That's the purpose of that. You just don't have one ethnic background. It's just unfair. It's just simply unfair."

Of the people who showed up for jury selection, 39 were called for questioning. Of them, 15 were excused for a variety of reasons and the remaining 24 were considered potential jurors. The lawyers then conferred and selected the final 14.

Security inside the courtroom was tighter than normal. Sheriff's deputies did not allow any cell phones or recording devices inside the courtroom.

White, the lawyers and the jury will return to Greene County Circuit Court on Wednesday, when opening statements are scheduled to begin.
