Kids Learn Safety Tips at Bike Rodeo

April 21, 2013

Young bikers are ready to take their wheels to the streets after Charlottesville's 10th annual Bike Rodeo Sunday afternoon.

More than 100 kids went through ten stations outside the IX Building to complete the course focused on bicycle safety.

The free training covered everything from basic bike maintenance to how to make sure your helmet fits properly.

After getting their bikes fine-tuned and their helmets strapped on, the 6-to-12-year-olds maneuvered through an obstacle course of orange cones.

Organizers say it is important to go over those skills now that it's bike-riding season for many kids.

"It's not only mom and dad telling you it's good to wear a helmet, it's good to look both ways, all of those things," said Shelly Stern, a volunteer at Community Bikes. "They're re-enforced using muscle movement and hands-on skills when you're practicing those tight turns and you're practicing stopping and starting."

The event was sponsored by Community Bikes and the City of Charlottesville.
