The Festival of the Photograph kicked off Wednesday night with colorful and historic images.
The LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph began with National Geographic photographer Tim Laman. He talked at the Paramount in town Wednesday night about the vibrant birds on the island of New Guinea.
"Some may call this a UFO or a psychedelic smiley face or something," said Laman as a bird spread its feathers into an arc and hopped around a female bird. Laman, a wildlife photographer and field biologist, said the bird was trying to attract the female with his showy plumage, the same goal as all the types of bright birds in New Guinea.
Laman is the first to capture all 39 species on camera.
"To be able to bring established, esteemed photographers from National Geographic to Charlottesville to be on the stage and talk about their career and their inspirations and their explorations is just a real awesome opportunity for the town of Charlottesville," said Andrew Owen, the LOOK3 Managing Director.
You can see some of the Laman's pictures in the trees on the Downtown Mall as part of the festival's annual Trees exhibit. The Trees exhibit shows natural history pictures in order to spread an ecologically aware message.
"The Trees exhibit that we have downtown is really important to us as a way of showcasing natural history photography, not only as a genre, but also to promote conservation awareness and environmental protection. It's important to our roots and it's important to the community as well," said Owen.
The LOOK3 Festival streamed the event online for free. It will stream many events throughout the festival.
