Roger Ebert was not a stranger to Charlottesville. He was a guest at the Virginia Film Festival several times. He analyzed films in shot by shot workshops, most recently in 2002.

Carroll Trainum, an Albemarle resident, interacted with Ebert on numerous occasions when volunteering with the Virginia Film Festival.

"He put it on the map. He got a lot of people to appreciate film in ways -- I think a lot of people came to see the guy they saw on TV doing the thumbs up and thumbs down -- but what they really got was a man who was passionate about film, who really loved film and loved to talk about film," said Trainum.

Trainum added that Ebert said a good movie is like an out-of-body experience, that it should make you forget you have anywhere else to be.
