A festival to celebrate Native American culture attracted people from all backgrounds on Saturday.

Authentic dancers and clothing and a tribe language lesson was all centered around preserving the Native American culture.

It was an event at Piedmont Virginia Community College completely organized by a 16-year-old Renessaince School student for her senior year thesis project.

She says her goal was to show the history of Native Americans as well as their role in society today.

"For me, taking part in my culture was to show this. To put this on so people could see who my people are - who we are, who we are today, we're still here, things like that. It just really stood out to me and really spoke to me," said Emily Gillispie, who's mother is Native American.

She says she hopes others can learn more about their own culture and open themselves up to others.
