Local businesses are gearing up for an international bicycling competition taking place in Virginia.

The UCI World Road Cycling Championships are coming to Richmond in 2015.

The local tourism community gathered to learn ways our area can capitalize on the event at Travinia Italian Kitchen and Wine Bar in Albemarle County. The Charlottesville Albemarle Conventions and Visitors Bureau organized the event Thursday afternoon.

The World Road Cycling Championships, or the Worlds, is held annually in cities around the globe. The Worlds is a nine-day event, featuring 12 races.

With this international race comes an international audience, watching and spending money in Virginia.

"Hundreds of millions of people will watch on TV. And beyond the race, the nature of a bike race on TV is you see a lot of the landmarks and attractions. So, it's a great kind of travel guide of the region. So, we want to be able to showcase that to drive tourism, not only here for the event, but much longer beyond that," said Lee Kallman, Richmond 2015 Marketing and Communications Director.

A study predicted that Virginia will make $160 million from the event, mostly in tourism dollars.
