More than 650,000 people who hold civilian jobs with the Defense Department are being forced to take unpaid days off starting this week.
They will be placed on furlough one day a week, for the next three months, as a result of the sequester cuts.
As a result, there were fewer workers on Monday at the National Ground Intelligence Center in Albemarle County.
"The NGIC is required to furlough approximately 14 percent of its workforce based on the guidelines set forth by the secretary of defense," spokeswoman Rita McIntosh said. "NGIC's leadership is doing everything within its capability to minimize the impact on its employees and those customers who rely on NGIC every day."
Ted Dinwiddie, who works for Overland Experts, a company that trains members of the military in off-road driving, says he has seen his work dry up ever since the military announced budget cuts.
"Normally it would have been one or two a month of several days worth of training," Dinwiddie said. "Now there's nothing that I can see on the calendar."
Dinwiddie says his neighbor lost his job at the NGIC a few months ago due to budget cuts.
"One day there was a moving van," Dinwiddie said. "I asked him what the heck was going on and he said, 'Well, I got let go.'"
Dinwiddie is considering a career change, too, if things don't start to pick up.
"I need the income," Dinwiddie said. "Reserves are beginning to get a little low."
