Made in Central Virginia: Gearhart's Chocolates

November 11, 2012

Despite the weak economy, business is booming at a Charlottesville business that caters to people with a sweet tooth.

Gearhart's Chocolates is known for delicious treats that are mostly made by hand.

Business is booming and according to owner Tim Gearhart, it's only getting better. "I think the key for a company like ours is come along and put our signature on some stuff," Gearhart said.

On a typical day, Gearhart and his staff of seven employees make about 1,500 pieces of chocolate. But with the holidays approaching, demand and production will increase significantly.

Gearhart is planning to add another half-dozen seasonal workers to keep up with demand. "It's important to find your spot and continue to stay focused and good at it is the hard part," Gearhart said.

Gearhart's Chocolates is also expanding on the wholesale market including wine shops and grocery stores outside the Commonwealth. And after 11 years of business at the Main Street Market in Charlottesville, the truffles and creamy mint julep chocolates are still sweet treats that remain affordable. "Even though we do something to some that's still kind of might be considered a higher end product, like I feel it is too, but on the same front it's a very affordable luxury," said Gearhart.

It's a luxury that continues to have a positive impact on the Charlottesville economy.
