Martha Jefferson Hospital (MJH) is ranked near the top of hospitals in Virginia for establishing paternity when a child is born.
It's part of a program from the Department of Social Services that offers unmarried parents the opportunity to establish who the father is for their newborns by voluntarily acknowledging fatherhood during the mother's hospital stay.
The hospital says establishing paternity is an important part of a child's life , and it's the least that they can do for babies born there.
“We are really excited about receive this recognition. Establishing paternity allows babies to receive both financial and emotional support from both parents from the very beginning,” says Ellen Donlow, with MJH. “It's a small role we can play in helping babies born here at Martha Jefferson.”
MJH ranked second on the list with an 84 percent paternity establishment rate.
