Martha Jefferson Healthwise: Hospital Safety

Sept. 4, 2013

A Charlottesville hospital is taking a closer look a safety. In this week's Martha Jefferson Healthwise report, there's a new initiative to make patients, visitors and staff safer when walking though the hospital doors.

Martha Jefferson Hospital holds a daily safety huddle Monday through Friday.

Each employee in the meeting represents a different department in the hospital. You can find staff there from the clinical side, engineering, billing and more.

"We talk about anything that folks are concerned about that maybe happened in the last 24 hours or anything looking ahead from a safety standpoint that they might be concerned about…staff safety, visitors’ safety and patient safety," said Amy Black, Chief Nurse Executive, Martha Jefferson Hospital.

For example, issues could be anything ranging from faulty glass on a cabinet in an exam room to identifying patients that are at risk of getting hurt.

"A manager might have just made rounds on their unit and they might talk about a particular patient that they're worried about because they're disoriented and a high risk for falls so we might talk more about that patient," said Black.

Once an issue is brought to the table, the group talks about solutions and sets a deadline for solving each potential safety issue.

"I think that it has just increased everyone's awareness of the need to be mindful of safety all the time. I think that we have actually fixed some issues relatively quickly that had a potential to impact patient safety and now that issue is resolved and taken away that risk," said Black.

Healthcare providers hope this new initiative will give patients, visitors and staff a peace of mind and leave them feeling much safer.
