Martha Jefferson Healthwise: Losing Weight

If you're thinking about starting a new diet, there are a few things you should know when it comes to weight management.
In this week's Martha Jefferson Healthwise report, CBS19's Stephanie Satchell sat down with Dr. Tiffani Dennis of Martha Jefferson Internal Medicine and found out the best way to lose weight and stay healthy.

If your News Year's resolution was to lose weight, you're not alone. Many people try fad diets and hit the gym at the first of the year only to quit just a few weeks later.

"If you make a resolution in January and by February you're not where you want to be or feel like you've kind of fallen off the wagon, still be encouraged to get back on and try again," said Dr. Tiffani Dennis.

Dr. Dennis says there are a few things you can do to manage your weight starting with the way you think.

"Don't pressure yourself to have some drastic change overnight. We encourage people to look at their weight over the long term. So, your goal should be maybe losing a pound or two in a week.

Although, Dr. Dennis says some fad diets may provide quick results, they're just temporary. She says you have to change your lifestyle if you want results that last.

"The best way to do that is (find) something that's manageable something you can sustain for a long time such as looking at decreasing your portion sizes, decreasing your carbohydrates, getting more protein in your diet and getting more of a whole foods diet and less processed foods," said Dr. Dennis.

The same goes for exercise.

"If you're going to start an exercise program, start slow. You don't have to get frustrated if you're not able to go out and run a marathon the first week. You should try to give yourself small goals. Try to exercise 15 minutes three times a week," said Dr. Dennis.

Dr. Dennis says making these small exercise and eating changes will help you keep the weight off and make you healthier at the same time.

Dr. Dennis recommends talking to your doctor before changing your diet and exercise routine.
