McAuliffe Launches Charlottesville Headquarters

June 30, 2013

Democratic candidate for governor Terry McAuliffe now has a Charlottesville headquarters.

More than 100 people turned out for the grand opening of the office on West Main Street Sunday evening.

"To have a crowd like this on a Sunday evening in the middle of the summer is pretty extraordinary," said McAuliffe. "It shows people are fired up for this election."

Republican candidate for governor Ken Cuccinelli has challenged McAuliffe to 15 debates. A person dressed as a chicken protested outside the grand opening, hinting McAuliffe isn't up for the challenge.

McAuliffe says he has committed to a third of the debates.

"We've agreed to five debates. He's only accepted I think two or three," said McAuliffe. "I'm doing the debates that Governor McDonnell, Governor Kaine and Governor Warner did -- the five traditional debates."

Cuccinelli's camp tells the Newsplex what voters need is a chance to examine candidates up close and personal.

McAuliffe says, no matter where he is, voters in the commonwealth want the same thing.

"What Virginians want us to focus on, they want to know about our plans, how we're going to grow the economy, how we're going to diversify it. That's what they're focused on -- and that's why so many people have showed up here with this great crowd," he said.

McAuliffe's office is at 913 West Main Street in Charlottesville.

Cuccinelli's neighborhood office is located at 1415 Sachem Pl. Suite 2A.
