McCormick Rd. Bridge to Reopen

July 26, 2013

McCormick Road in Charlottesville is set to reopen to traffic next week.

The bridge that crosses Emmet Street has been closed for nearly two-months while crews replaced the structure and deck.

“We wanted the work completed prior to the start of the fall semester,” said Jay Klingel, director of operations and maintenance for Facilities Management.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) initially posted an 8-ton weight limit on the bridge in July 2012 after deterioration was found in the bridge deck. Because of the posting, University Transit System detoured its buses around the bridge.

VDOT, which owns the bridge and paid for the estimated $1 million repair, raised the clearance to about 13 feet, 6 inches. There had been incidents in the past in which tall trucks collided with the deck supports.

The new bridge will open to traffic on Monday. University Transit System buses are scheduled to resume routes over the bridge on Wednesday.
