November 27, 2013

Rockbridge Area Community Services (RACS) is commenting following the tragic stabbing of Senator Creigh Deeds by his son, who later took his own life.

Gus Deeds was given a mental evaluation by RACS and was later released because there were no hospital beds available for him.

Dennis Cropper, The Executive Director of the RACS released a statement saying quote:

“The hearts of all staff at Rockbridge Area Community Services go out to the Deeds family at this most difficult time. We will continue to keep them in our thoughts and prayers.
I know firsthand the dedicated, caring, and professional manner in which the staff at RACS goes about performing their jobs day in and day out while serving individuals in need of mental health services in our community.
We look forward to working with Senator Deeds and the General Assembly as we seek to improve the delivery of mental health services throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia.”

During a traditional ceremony giving thanks, Governor Bob McDonnell paid tribute to Sen. Deeds and also addressed mental health issues in the Commonwealth.

“I think we need to look at clarifying and enforcing protocols for finding bed space better,” says Gov. McDonnell. “I think we need to make more bed space in the system available.”

“I think that we should look at perhaps extending that four hour rule for holding somebody until a proper evaluation and a search for a bed space can be done.”

Sen. Creigh Deeds was rushed to UVa. Health System after the attack and is now recovering at home. He is also pushing for better mental health services across Virginia.
