Middle School Teacher Launches Bid for City Council

March 26, 2013

A middle school teacher has launched a campaign for Charlottesville City Council.

Melvin Grady teaches math at Buford Middle School. He was born and raised in Charlottesville and graduated from the University of Virginia.

Grady says Charlottesville schools need more funding, especially to help young children get into Head Start programs.

"Putting money in the gifted program is one thing," said Grady. "But if you're already gifted, you probably don't need as much. Some people don't have books at home, don't do any reading. So then into kindergarten, they're not ready to learn and it snowballs from there."

Grady says he is also focused on improving public housing.
