3,000 Race in Charlottesville Women's Four Miler

August 31, 2013

Cars filed into Foxfield this morning with people hopping out, ready to start racing for a cure. Saturday was the 21st-annual Charlottesville Women's Four Miler, and 3,550 women came out to run for a cause

"I want to inspire the people that I work with on their first race,” says Melissa Miller. “One of our teammates had breast cancer and has fought the battle very courageously and she was in our team last year as well.”

"I know for me personally, breast cancer runs in my family and I want to support the women in my family who has to deal with that," says Molly Cincotta.

"We're just out here to have a good time and support a good cause," says Lauren Evers.

Many women ran for someone they know who is battling breast cancer. Other women running are survivors.

"I'm a two-time breast cancer survivor and finished my treatments last Thursday,” says Sharon Bingler. “It's very difficult very hard, but coming to something like this proves that we can fight this and we can find a cure."

The money raised from participants goes to the UVa Cancer Center's Breast Care Program, which supports things like mammograms and genetic testing for women who wouldn't be able to afford breast care.

"Breast cancer is a very curable illness. Typically it's caught very early,” says Dr. Tom Loughran, director of the cancer center. The best method is early screening and detection."

Many others stood on the sidelines and cheered on the women racing with hopes that better research can lead to better breast care.

"I want them to hear that we have a cure and not that you have to have cancer and you have to have chemo and you have to have radiation,” says Bingler. “I don't want people to have to hear that."
