There's a new way to order delivery or take-out in the Charlottesville area, all thanks to two University of Virginia students.
Foodio has been two years in the making for co-founders Rory Stolzenberg and DJ Collier, but the food ordering app has now launched.
The app allows large groups to place one order directly from a cell phone and split the bill any number of ways. The method takes the IOUs out of the equation, something Collier says was the inspiration for the app.
"That college experience of knowing that every time you order food, your friends don't have enough cash to pay you back and it's always a problem," said Collier.
Instead, Foodio allows groups to put it all on plastic -- no matter how many cards.
"By having this credit card splitting feature it's going to make orders bigger for the restaurant, so they're going to see more of them and they're going to be larger," said Stolzenberg.
So far, six local restaurants have teamed up to offer their food through Foodio. Vocelli Pizza in Albemarle County is one of them.
"Smart phones, I mean, everyone has one now it seems. And the market is only getting bigger," said Vocelli Pizza owner Brian Washington.
Washington has considered creating an app of his own.
"I just didn't have the resources or the ability to put this together, so when they approached me, I jumped on it," said Washington. "This is what I was looking for."
Washington says his businesses is benefiting in more ways than one.
"It saves us on labor. We don't have to pay people to take the orders. The orders are correct because [customers] place the order themselves. And lastly, through online mediums or apps, we typically get a higher-average ticket, so it benefits us in many ways," said Washington.
Right now, Foodio is a mobile website and an Android app. The co-founders say it will be in the app store for smart phone users in a few weeks.
