New Cycling Event Coming to Albemarle Co

July 3, 2013

A brand new event for cyclists is coming to Albemarle County.

It's the inaugural Gran Fondo Virginia bike race, and it will be held on Sunday, September 8.

Proceeds from the Gran Fondo Virginia will support local charity, Better World Betty.

Gran Fondo, which means "Big Endurance" in Italian, is a popular type of cycling event in Europe that can include up to 10,000 riders.

"It will further announce to the outside world what a great outdoor destination Charlottesville and Albemarle County is," says Sports-Vista Executive Director Matthew Buttermna. "There are Gran Fondos in places like Whistler, British Columbia, NYC, San Diego and its only natural for a world class destination like Charlottesville to have a Gran Fondo."

Registration and further information is available at the event website,
