New Music Site Connects Listeners to Local Performers

March 5, 2013

A Charlottesville man has created a new way to listen to music through an internet site called GigDog.

The internet radio station, founded by J.R. Gentle, highlights local artists and music from other bands coming to town.

The Hill and Wood is an up-and-coming band from Charlottesville that is featured on the site. The group just released its first album, and band members say it is a part-time job just to get their music heard.

"Every city we go to, we try to contact the press and radio and try to get as many people hearing the music for the first time as possible," said band member Sam Bush.

GigDog takes the middle man out of the equation by delivering local music directly to listeners. Music lovers can search the site by city, band or venue to see what is playing in their area.

"What separates GigDog from things like Pandora and Spotify is it connects with people on a personal level," said Gentle. "Rather than introducing a new band that you've never heard of, it's a new band that's visiting your city next week or it's a local band."

Gentle says the site is also a benefit for bands. For artists traveling on tour, the site gives people a chance to hear their music before buying tickets to a show.

"Everybody wins in that situation. Both the band, who want to get to know people on the road, and the people who like listening to new music," said Gentle.

Eventually, listeners will be able to download songs and buy tickets to performances straight from the website.
