The Blue Ridge PACE Center is based on the idea that caring for the elderly can address the big picture.

Social workers on site say Wii bowling is just one of many creative ways that the new pace center will care for frail older adults.

"Well, its unique because so often the frail elderly are in the community and they're trying to find places to live, they are trying to make doctor’s appointments, there is family members that are stressed trying to take care of them, and they've reached their tipping point and they are ready to take them to the nursing home. So this offers them an alternative."

They are providing medical and social services, meaning everything from transportation, medical care, and creative physical therapy can all be taken care of less than one roof.

If you walk around the facility with them, it really feels like they have thought of everything.

"We are also hoping to have a healing garden next door. Right here in this grassy area."

There is on-site doctor, nurse, physical therapist, but beyond that a dietician, a pharmacist, speech and occupational therapists.

So there is an ongoing conversation with caregivers about the big picture.

And if you need it, they'll come get you in the morning and drop you back off.

For some families, it will provide the support that bridges that gap allowing their family member to stay home.

To be eligible you have to be 55 or older, qualify for nursing facility level of care, live in the service area, and be able to live safely in the community.
