New Police Training Facility Still in Planning Phase

Oct. 16, 2013

A joint police firearms range in Albemarle County is still in the planning phase.

The range would be used by Albemarle, Charlottesville and University of Virginia police as a training facility.

The board of supervisors have not yet voted on a location, but the county is continuing to pursue a site on Milton Road that is currently used as an outdoor facility for UVa police.

If approved, it will be turned into an indoor practice range for all three police departments.

"We want these officers trained to the hilt," says Albemarle County Supervisor Rodney Thomas. "We want to have all the capabilities of handling themselves, handling their weapon, and knowing how to use that weapon and when to use that weapon. And that's what the training provides."

The indoor facility is expected to cost between $4 and $5 million.

There is no timetable for the project.
