The Charlottesville Albemarle Airport plans will open its new 6,800 foot runway on Thursday. The runway may pave the way for larger planes to fly in and out of CHO. It could also open up more routes.
The airport has been planning for the new runway for five years.
On Thursday, CHO will also open up a second security line for the first time. Airport officials say the second line will help with the holiday rush, and beyond.
"With the single line configuration we're able to process about 120 people an hour," said Bill Pahuta, the executive director of CHO. "With two lanes we should be able to process 300 people an hour."
Pahuta says the busiest time at the airport is between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. Six different flights take off during that time period, and it typically causes some backups in security. With the additional security line, Pahuta says the lines will be much shorter.
