New Runway Ready to Open at Charlottesville Albemarle Airport

December 18, 2012

Two big changes coming to the Charlottesville Albemarle Airport.

According to the airport's Facebook page, its new runway should open up by the end of the week. The runway is being extended from 6,001 feet to 6,800 feet.

According to the airport's website, CHO lost nonstop flights to Detroit on Delta due to inadequate runway length. Officials say the runway extension project will allow bigger planes to land and take off, and potentially open up new routes.

Two immediate benefits include:

- More flights can be fully booked to depart from CHO; meaning more options for travel from Central Virginians.

- Airlines will find CHO more attractive because a fully booked flight is more profitable for them. This will provide leverage for the airport to negotiate better fares for CHO travelers.

Inside the airport, two security lanes will soon be in use. This will eliminate the delays as people get screened before their flight.
