The McArthur Squash Center at the Boar's Head Sports Club is holding its grand opening festival of squash.
The public is getting its first looks at the 33,000 square-foot facility, and pros and amateurs are christening the new courts with several tournaments throughout the weekend.
The facility boasts 11 courts and room for about one thousand spectators. One court, called a “show court" is designed for televised matches.
Squash enthusiasts hope the new facility will be the southern starting point for a sport that is already popular around the world.
"My job is actually to grow the game here in Charlottesville and push the game hopefully south in the United States,” said Director of Squash Mark Allen. “It's a very popular game in the northeast, and it's starting to spread across the country, and we're hoping this will be its first move to actually moving further south."
The Squash Center was built thanks to a $12.4 million donation from the Quantitative Foundation.
