New Va. Law Puts Sales Tax on Some Shopping Websites

Sept. 2, 2013

Buying something online at Amazon.com will now cost Virginians an extra 5.3 percent.

A change in state law went into effect on Sunday, forcing some online retailers to start collecting sales tax.

The move is expected to bring an extra $24 million a year to Virginia's coffers.

There is now an effort underway to get a similar law passed through Congress.
