UPDATED: State Police Release New Details in Culpeper Shooting

Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal shooting that involved deputies from the Culpeper County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators released a statement with the following, confirmed information:

"On April 11, a Culpeper County Deputy Sheriff was conducting radar speed enforcement on Route 15 within Culpeper County. At approximately 6:43 PM the deputy observed a 2001 Ford Escape traveling southbound at a high rate of speed and checked its speed in excess of 100 mph. The deputy attempted to affect a traffic stop on the Ford Escape, but it refused to yield and the deputy lost sight of the vehicle. The initial deputy and a second deputy from the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation in an attempt to locate the vehicle and its operator. At approximately 7:25 PM, their investigation lead them to a residence on Oak Forest Drive in Rapidan, where the vehicle and its operator were located.

"During the course of being apprehended, the driver, Harold Lee Daniels, 59, of Rapidan, pointed a handgun at the deputies. The deputies subsequently shot the male subject. Mr. Daniels died at the scene.

"An autopsy is scheduled to be conducted on today’s date at the Medical Examiner’s Office in Manassas, Virginia.

"The investigation into this incident remains ongoing at this time."

The investigation continues into a deadly shooting involving the Culpeper County Sheriff's Office, that happened after a high-speed chase that began on Route-15 near Madison County.

According to the Sheriff's Department, a deputy shot and killed a suspect at a residence on Oak Forest Drive in Rapidan.

According to the Culpeper Star Exponent, a white SUV was being pursued prior to the shooting, when it turned onto White Oak Road, taking out a stop sign and running through several yards.

Deputies will not say if the two incidents were connected.

Culpeper Deputies say Virginia State Police are taking over the investigation.

The names of the deputy and deceased suspect are not being released.

The Culpeper County Sheriff's Office days a suspect is dead after being shot by a deputy.

Lt. Jason Romero says in a written statement that the incident occurred Thursday evening at a home in Rapidan. He says neither of the deputies involved was injured.

No further details about the incident were immediately released. Romero says Sheriff Scott Jenkins has turned the investigation over to the Virginia State Police.
