PVCC Plans for Expansion

December 6, 2012

Piedmont Virginia Community College is planning to build a new student center to deal with a drastic rise in enrollment.

The number of students at PVCC has increased by about 2,000 in the past six years. The president of PVCC, Frank Friedman says the spike in enrollment is fueled by the recession. More and more students are choosing to save money by completing their first two years of higher education at community college.

The new student center at PVCC will give students the space they need for all the tasks they do outside the classroom.

"We're very fortunate that we opened up the Kluge Moses Science Building a few years ago," said Friedman. "Now it's time to catch up in terms of the support service space that we really lack."

The school is asking the state for funding for the new building. But Friedman says they are also exploring other ways to pay for the student center, if money from the state is delayed or unavailable.

PVCC also started moving into its new Jefferson School Center downtown on Thursday. Classes there begin next semester.
