Patriotic Light Show Shines at Lake Monticello

July 3, 2013

A Fluvanna County man is lighting up Lake Monticello to show some Fourth of July spirit.

Ten-thousand lights are beaming on Jeff Spinello's home on Lewis Court. He has been setting up holiday-themed light shows for nearly ten years, but this is the first time his yard has been covered in red, white and blue.

"I do an outrageous Christmas display every year, and I've decided this year to try something a little different," said Spinello. "I wanted to do a patriotic theme for Memorial Day and the Fourth of July."

The lights kick in each night at 8:30. Since Memorial Day, cars have been lining the street to tune into 88.1 FM and take in the five-song show.

"As soon as you round the corner, the lights will catch you, well, by surprise," said Shenia Thompson.

Thompson recently moved into the house across the street. While Spinello's spectacles caught her off guard at first, she says his spirit is spreading.

"It catches on. I've seen lights up from folks that wouldn't normally have them up around this time of year, so it's definitely a great effect for others," she said.

Neighbors and visitors aren't the only people benefiting from the elaborate display. Spinello has set up a small donation box to collect money for the local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans.

"I think it's just a way to give back. Times are tough for a lot of people. This is something I enjoy doing," said Spinello. "Like the Christmas show, it takes me months to set it up, and when people come out and see it and I hear the comments, it's worth it."

The show can be viewed from 8:30 until 10 p.m. at 4 Lewis Court at Lake Monticello.

The lights will be up through Tuesday, July 9.
