In the early morning hours on Saturday, Albemarle County Police responded to a 911 call for a domestic situation at 9049 Rockfish Gap Turnpike where an officer fired his gun at the scene leaving one man dead.

Because of the investigation, Route 250 in Albemarle County was closed for a large portion of Saturday morning from Route 151 to the top of Afton Mountain.

Across the street and up a hill are several apartments and people living there didn't seem to hear anything overnight but woke up to the news.

"A neighbor's husband told me there at the apartment across the street someone got shot, it might have been a boyfriend girlfriend situation but I didn't hear nothing you know, it's so wooded up here there's a buffer," said William Johnson, who lives in the Afton Lodge apartments across the street.

The owner of the house where the shooting took place also owns the Afton Lodge apartments and says the two people involved in the altercation early Saturday morning are not his tenants. But the couple living at 9049 woke up to gunshots.

"When they came out they saw that police were here taking care of the situation," said landlord William Rothacker.

When Rothacker got to the scene around 3 a.m., he said he saw the man's body covered up in the front lawn.

"The couple living here is a minister and his wife. The minister's daughter was involved in the altercation and to the best of our knowledge we do not know how the gentleman, the alleged boyfriend or ex-boyfriend, was even on the property," he said.

He has owned several properties in the area for 20 years and said he has never had an issue. Neighbors say it is a very quiet area.

Rothacker said he is thankful the police got there when they did and were able to save the woman's life.

Albemarle County Police say an internal investigation will begin and the officer involved in the shooting has been put on paid administrative leave, as is protocol for these situations.

"We ask that you give us time to conduct these investigations. It is imperative that we focus on the facts and do not release any information that would disrupt the integrity of these investigations," a Saturday night press release said.

Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal shooting near Afton that involved an Albemarle County Police officer.

Albemarle officers responded to a home on the 4600-block of Rockfish Gap Turnpike early Saturday morning for a domestic situation. Police have not released any details about what led the officer to fire his weapon, but one person has died.

The officer involved was not injured.

VSP's Police Shooting Investigative Team from the Appomattox Field Office spent Saturday morning at the scene to conduct the investigation into the incident, at the request of the Albemarle County Police Department.

This is the second Albemarle County Officer involved shooting in as many weeks. On May 26, an officer shot a man during a reported struggle on Birdwood Court in Charlottesville.
