Poll Shows Va. Voters Still Approve of Gov. McDonnell

May 6, 2013

A recent poll released by The Washington Post shows that Va. voters are still pleased with Governor Bob McDonnell. This comes a week after information about an FBI investigation into McDonnell's relationship with donors surfaced, but overall voters still believe he has a handle on his job as governor.

Fifty-four percent of Democrats, 58% of Independents and 76% of Republicans believe that McDonnell is handling his job as governor. But is his approval still high because he isn't running for governor in the upcoming election and people are focusing their attention on the new candidates? Or is it because they just don't know enough about the case?

"The poll indicates that the Star Scientific case hasn't had much impact on how people view Bob McDonnell," says Geoff Skelley from the Center for Politics. "What does that say about voters? Well it says that they probably aren't paying that much attention or that $15,000 dollars doesn't really strike them as an incredible amount of money."

"I think it's going to take a lot more for people to start paying attention," explains Skelley.

When people were asked if Gov. McDonnell has high moral and ethical standards, 59% of voters said yes, 16% said no and 25% did not have an opinion.

The only thing that voters did not agree on was that Virginia politicians do not have to disclose information on gifts given to their family members. Over 70% of voters believe that should change.
