Public Housing Settlement Moves Forward

November 4, 2013

Some public housing residents that were getting overcharged for nearly a decade had their day in court on Monday.

A group of tenants had filed a class action lawsuit against the Charlottesville Residential Housing Authority (CRHA) to say they were getting overcharged for utility bills.

Brenda Castaneda, an attorney at the Legal Aid Justice Center, says the burden of what residents were paying made for some tough decisions.

The federal court judge decided in court today the terms of the settlement are fair. The settlement would have the CRHA paying back more than $96,000 in overcharges.

Since the court agreed to the settlement today, the eligible tenants will now have to agree to the terms. Once that is done, the CRHA could start paying out settlement money as early as this spring.
