Hurt Talks Immigration, Gun Control in Albemarle Visit

January 30, 2013

U.S. Rep. Robert Hurt spent some time meeting with constituents Wednesday in his Albemarle County office.

The Fifth District Republican talked to constituents about a variety of topics, including immigration reform and gun control.

A bipartisan group of senators are currently working on a comprehensive immigration reform proposal. Hurt said he's hopeful the Senate can act quickly on this so the House can also review the bill.

Hurt said he plans to review the draft before it gets to the House.

"I think we also have to recognize there is a rule of law in this country and we should be very careful about any solution that rewards people for illegal behavior. Those are things that I'll be looking at," Hurt said about the immigration reform.

Hurt said he's also hearing from constituents about gun control, a popular ongoing debate in Washington. Hurt said the Newtown school shooting should be on the forefront of everyone's minds when addressing the issues.

He said Congress needs to address the root of the problem while also protecting Second Amendment rights.

"Can we do things better to help identify people who have mental illness, and can we do things better to make sure people who have mental illness do not have access to firearms? What can we do about school security?" Hurt said.

Hurt said he plans to return to Washington on Sunday.
