Rep. Robert Hurt Responds to Phone Spying Program

June 7, 2013

Virginia's 5th District Representative Robert Hurt responded to the National Security Agency's phone data collection program that many say could be called spying.

Hurt released the following statement:

“While we must do all we can to protect Americans from terrorism, protecting our citizens’ civil liberties must be paramount in that process. Congress must conduct strong oversight of the executive branch to ensure that its actions do not exceed the scope of its authority under our counterterrorism laws. I look forward to gathering all the facts from the Administration regarding these activities.”

After a speech on healthcare in San Jose, President Barack Obama answered questions about the program, saying "every member of Congress has been briefed on this program."
