Residents to Find New Ways to Store Junk Cars with New Ordinance

September 18, 2013

The Albemarle Co. Planning Commission is looking at ways to change the way people store junk cars in neighborhoods. A new inoperable vehicle ordinance was proposed during last night's meeting and many people around Albemarle Co. believe they are eyesores.

"If your vehicle isn't working that's one thing, but if your vehicle hasn't works for 10 or 11 years that's another thing," says Thiffany Childress, Albemarle Co. resident.

Childress is not happy with the way her neighbor stores cars near her home.

"We have limited parking and when the vehicles are not moved or if they aren't doing anything with them we can’t park and I only have two parking spaces," says Childress.

The chair of the Albemarle Co. Planning Commission explained that they want to limit the amount of inoperable vehicles, on a lot less than five acres, to one.

"What we would like to do is make it part of the regulation that if you have an inoperable vehicle it must be to the side or the rear," says Cal Morris.

Along with the car being out of sight, it must also be covered with a form-fitting cover. If the ordinance gets passed they will break it up into two phases the first phase will deal with the developed area of the county, the second will deal with rural areas.

A public hearing for the ordinance will be held October 22nd and residents are asked to come. The Board of Supervisors will hear the ordinance in November.
