Richmond's City Council wants Amtrak to let train passengers bring their bicycles on board.
Amtrak already offers a bike-on-board service on trips elsewhere. Media outlets report the City Council authorized a resolution last week to ask Amtrak to extend the service to trains coming through Richmond.
Officials with Amtrak say funding and schedules factors have to be considered before bicycle options can be significantly expanded for passengers.
Currently, most Amtrak passengers first have to take apart and store their bikes in a container that can be checked as baggage, making it necessary for them to arrange additional transportation outside the train trip.
Richmond will host the USA Cycling Collegiate Nationals in May.
