UPDATED: 2nd Victim of Rt. 29 Wreck Dies

Albemarle County Police have confirmed the driver of a car involved in a crash that occurred on April 10 on Seminole Trail has died from her injuries.

Jeannette Smith, 88, was taken to University of Virginia Medical Center after the wreck and died Tuesday morning from her injuries. Her husband, Gerard Joseph Smith, 87, died on the day of the crash.

The single car wreck happened just south of Town Center Boulevard, near Hollymead Town Center, on Rt. 29. Her car ran off the side of the road and hit a tree in the median.

UPDATE April 10, 2013 6:30 PM

Albemarle County Police released the following statement with new information on the accident on Route 29:

"The Albemarle County Crash Reconstruction Team is investigating a fatal crash that occurred on Wednesday, April 10th 2013.

"The single vehicle crash occurred at 1:02 pm just south of Town Center Boulevard on Seminole Trail. The 2002 Buick Lesabre ran off the left side of the road, striking a tree in the median. At this time, the cause of the crash remains under investigation. Both passengers were wearing their seat belts.

"The 88 year old female driver was taken to UVa. Medical Center and remains in critical condition. The 87 year old male passenger, Gerard Joseph Smith, was taken to UVa. and later died from his injuries. Both were from Albemarle County.

"This is the fourth fatal crash this year in Albemarle County. There were 12 fatal crashes in 2012."

Two people were seriously injured along Route 29 North on Wednesday afternoon.

The wreck happened at Town Center Drive at 1:00 PM.

Police say, the driver of the car ran off the road and went right into a tree along the median.

The driver and passenger were taken away by ambulance with critical injuries.
