SOCA Holds Golf Tournament Fundraiser for International Trip

October 12, 2013

SOCA might be known for soccer, but the group got the help of some fans of another sport for some fundraising Saturday.

The Soccer Organization of Charlottesville-Albemarle held a golf tournament at the Old Trail golf course in Crozet.

Players spent $115 to participate or $400 per team.

The money raised benefits the group's outreach program and its efforts to travel abroad next year.

"It's a great cultural experience for them, and the soccer is a great cultural experience in Italy, so it's a learning lesson," said SOCA program director Matt Wilson. "These players are very good players -- our top team from Charlottesville -- so they get to play against quality opponents from Europe. They learn a lot and come back as better players and better people from the trip."

This was the third year of the tournament.
