The Albemarle County School Board has appointed Michael Irani as the new principal for Meriwether Lewis Elementary School.
Irani, currently the assistant principal at Cale Elementary School, succeeds Karen Marcus, who has been serving as interim principal at Meriwether Lewis.
Officials say Irani is an experienced school administrator at both the elementary and high school levels. An undergraduate of the College of William & Mary, Irani received his Master’s degree from Middlebury College and his doctorate in education from the University of Virginia.
“Under the outstanding leadership of Lisa Jones, Cale’s principal, and with strong contributions from Mike, Cale Elementary School has been an outstanding performer for children in such innovative program areas as their world language pilot and their work with technology,” said Dr. Matt Haas, the school division’s Assistant Superintendent for Organizational and Human Resource Leadership. “Mike’s educational qualifications and experience will be an excellent fit at Meriwether Lewis.”
The search committee was impressed by Irani’s passion for student learning, hands-on problem solving, and community outreach, Haas said. The search committee included school administrators, teachers and parents. Additionally, the committee conducted an online community survey asking parents about the attributes most valued in a principal.
“It is a rare privilege to be an educator,” Irani said. “As a parent of two children, I easily can connect with the trust that parents place in us to care for the most important part of their lives when they send their children to school every morning.”
Irani will be joining one of only two schools in Virginia to earn a Blue Ribbon designation from the federal Department of Education.
“I know the Meriwether Lewis community and everyone in our school division is deeply appreciative of the contributions of Karen Marcus and Brandi Robertson, the school’s assistant principal, during this transitional period. They have kept a very high performing school moving forward without pause,” Haas said.
Irani will be sharing duties between Cale and Meriwether Lewis over the next several weeks. He will be at Meriwether Lewis full-time beginning May 1.
