School Board Retreat Focuses On The Future

June 3, 2013

The Albemarle County School Board held a retreat Monday morning. The focus of the meeting was to plan for the future of Albemarle Co. Schools.

Board members gathered at the Paramount theater for an all-day retreat going over the positives and negatives of the past school year. They then looked at ways to make next year better.

Surveys were sent out to teachers, parents and students asking them to reflect on the past year, and list the most important things that they hope to see next year. Some students believed that more hands on learning would make for a better learning experience. High schoolers thought that critical thinking skills would help them to succeed in the future.

The chair of the school board, Steve Koleszar, believes they are headed in the right direction.

"In the last couple of years we've tried to focus on life-long learner standards, on communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking and getting away from what sometimes becomes a test-prep curriculum," says Koleszar.

The board members are hoping to get the Board of Education to change the Standards of Learning (SOL) Test so that it measures more 21st century learning skills and not just how well students perform on a multiple choice test.
